Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek
The Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek is a spectacular Himalayan journey through high mountain passes, yak herder country, alpine meadows and a chain of pristine high-altitude lakes above Thimphu.
This 11-day journey combines six days of trekking with the Tiger’s Nest hike and cultural visits in Paro, Thimphu and Punakha. It is ideal for travellers seeking a rewarding Himalayan adventure without committing to a long expedition.
This 12-day itinerary includes six trekking days, the Tiger’s Nest hike, cultural sightseeing in Paro and Thimphu, and a visit to Punakha and Wangdue. The trek starts at Gynekha and finishes at Chamgang.

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Arrive at Paro International Airport after a spectacular Himalayan flight. On a clear day, the journey offers views of major Himalayan peaks, including Mount Everest, followed by a dramatic descent into Paro Valley.
Your Taktsang Expeditions representative will meet you at the airport and escort you to the hotel. After lunch, visit Rinpung Dzong, the National Museum and Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s oldest religious sites. Later, enjoy a stroll through Paro town and experience the local lifestyle.
After a short drive, begin the approximately five-hour return hike to Taktsang Monastery, one of Bhutan’s most famous religious sites. The trail follows an ancient footpath with prayer wheels before reaching the monastery, dramatically perched about 1,000 metres above the valley floor.
According to tradition, Guru Padmasambhava came to this sacred place riding a tigress and meditated in a cave to subdue forces obstructing the spread of Buddhism.
On the return journey, visit the ruins of Drukgyel Dzong, the “Castle of the Victorious Drukpa,” commemorating Bhutan’s victory over Tibetan invasions. On a clear day, there may be views of Mount Jomolhari.

After about an hour’s drive to Gynekha, begin the trek with a short descent to the river followed by a climb to a large rock platform with picturesque views of the valley below. Continue for another couple of hours to reach the campsite at Gur, passing yak pastures along the way.

Capsite altitude: 4,300 m
Trek along ridges through rugged mountain vegetation, alpine flowers and refreshing meadows. From the first pass, weather permitting, enjoy views of Kanchenjunga and many Himalayan peaks across Bhutan.
Continue into the Dagala range, characterised by open meadows and yak herder huts. The final section descends to the campsite near the serene Uthso Tsho lake.
Spend the day exploring the beautiful high-altitude landscape around Labatama. Excursions can be made to surrounding lakes including Reli Tsho, Hen Tsho and Jama Tsho, offering an opportunity to enjoy the pristine environment and, where appropriate, try trout fishing.

Today offers some of the trek’s grandest mountain views. Weather permitting, the panorama may include Everest, Kanchenjunga, Jomolhari, Jichu Drake, Tshering Gang, Khangbum, Masang Gang, Tsende Gang and Gangche Ta.
Follow the western side of Dala Lake and climb to a mountain saddle at 4,520 metres, the maximum elevation of the trek. Descend to Doccha Chhu, follow the river for a while and continue to Panka over a trail of intermittent climbs and descents.

Capsite altitude: 3,080 m
Cross several passes without major sustained ascents. The trail is known for high-altitude flora and birdlife, including blue poppies during their flowering season.
Before descending to Talakha Monastery, cross Tale La at 4,180 metres. Camp near the monastery, where the following morning may begin with the sound of monks chanting and ritual bells. The area offers a final panoramic view over Thimphu.

After a short walk, reach a feeder road leading to Chamgang village. From Chamgang, drive to Thimphu and relax for the remainder of the day.
Explore Bhutan’s capital, beginning with Buddha Point for panoramic views of Thimphu and the surrounding area. Continue to Changangkha Temple, the Takin Preserve and the Sangaygang viewpoint.
Visit a nunnery, the Folk Heritage Museum and the Textile Museum, followed by Tashichho Dzong, which houses important royal, monastic and government offices. Where available, watch an archery match and enjoy an evening walk through Thimphu town.
Drive from Thimphu through changing mountain scenery to Dochula Pass at 3,100 metres. On a clear day, the pass offers extensive views of Bhutan’s eastern Himalayan range. The 108 Buddhist stupas at Dochula add to the beauty of the setting.
Descend into the subtropical Punakha Valley and visit Punakha Dzong, dramatically situated between the male and female rivers. After lunch, walk to Chimi Lhakhang, the Temple of Fertility associated with the Divine Madman. Overnight at a hotel in Punakha.
On the return journey, visit Wangduephodrang and stroll through Wangdue town. Continue approximately 125 kilometres back to Paro and visit additional historical sites depending on time.
In the evening, enjoy a farewell dinner at the hotel.
After breakfast, your guide and driver will transfer you to Paro International Airport for your onward flight to Bangkok, Delhi, Kathmandu or your next destination. Your representative will assist with departure arrangements and bid you farewell.
